MLB Rumors: Red Sox Predicted to Swing Deal for All-Star Infielder
The Boston Red Sox have had a nightmare start to the 2026 season. At the time of this writing, the Red Sox have a 1-5 record and are at the bottom of the American League East standings. When noting that the Red Sox's goal is to build off their solid 2025 season, there is no question that this kind of start from them has been incredibly disappointing.
With the Red Sox having a tough start to the campaign, it would not be particularly surprising if they looked to add to their roster. One of their biggest needs is another star infielder after losing Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs in free agency this offseason. Because of this, they are now being linked to one of baseball's most notable trade candidates.
In a recent article for FanSided, Austin Owens predicted that the Red Sox would swing a deal for Washington Nationals star infielder CJ Abrams this season.
"Look for the slumping Boston Red Sox to make a move for Abrams and improve their lineup to try and fight their way out of the AL East," Owens wrote.
When looking at the Red Sox's roster, Abrams is a player that they undoubtedly could use. If they landed him, they would have another star in their infield as they look to be true contenders in 2026.
With the Nationals being in a rebuild, Abrams could very well end up being on the move by this year's trade deadline. He is exactly the kind of player that could get the Nationals a major return in a trade, and the Red Sox should be among the teams that express interest in him.
In 144 games last season for the Nationals, Abrams had 19 home runs, 31 stolen bases, 35 doubles, 60 RBIs, and a .257 batting average.
