Mariners Make MLB History With Record-Breaking Contract Extension
How certain are the Seattle Mariners that their top prospect, shortstop Colt Emerson, will be a core piece of their team into the future? $95 million worth of certainty. Before he even makes his big league debut. That makes MLB history, as the richest deal ever handed to a pre-debut player.
BREAKING: The Mariners are signing Colt Emerson, @MLBPipeline's No. 7 prospect, to an eight-year, $95 million extension worth up to $130M, per @ByRobertMurray.

Emerson is baseball's No. 7 overall prospect. He's guaranteed $95M over eight years, and with escalators, could reach $130M.
Emerson had just six games in Class AAA at the end of last season, and has started at that level this year, opening 2026 going 5-for-14 with a homer and a 1.000 OPS.
Last year in the minors, across three levels, he batted .285 with an .842 OPS with 16 homers and 14 stolen bases in 130 games.
He's considered one of the best pure hitters in the minors, and has proven to be an elite fielder at short as well.
Emerson's deal sits at the top of the list of contracts handed out to players with zero major league service time.

SEA/INF Colt Emerson
8-years, $95M (max $130M)
MIL/OF Jackson Chourio
8-years, $82M (max $140M)
MIL/SS Cooper Pratt
8-years, $50.75M (max TBD)
CWS/OF Luis Robert Jr.
6-years, $50M (max $88M)
CWS/OF Eloy Jimenez
6-years,…
The $95M guaranteed tops the $82M that the Milwaukee Brewers gave Jackson Chourio a couple of years ago. The others on the list barely make the $50M mark.
He was Seattle's first round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, (22nd overall).
We should expect to see him in the majors soon.
