Red Sox Re-Sign Gold Glover 2 Days After Releasing Him
The Boston Red Sox have given a multi-year deal to a player who they just released two days ago—and who will be sitting out the 2026 season recovering from shoulder surgery.
Former Gold Glove second baseman Brendan Rodgers has agreed to a two-year minor league deal with Boston.

The 29-year-old Rodgers suffered a torn labrum and a chipped bone in his shoulder this spring and has had season-ending right shoulder labral revision surgery.
The seven-year veteran had signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox in early February with an invitation to big league camp. He was expected to play a notable role as a backup infielder at least for the BoSox this season. But he got into just six games at spring training before the injury.
Brendan Rodgers will rehab under Red Sox supervision, with an eye to 2027
Now with the new MiLB deal, he'll be able to rehab under the team's supervision, and he'll hopefully get another shot to make the roster in 2027.
Rodgers spent last season with the Houston Astros, but got into only 43 games, and batted just .191. He spent the first six years of his career with the Colorado Rockies, where he batted .266 with a .726 OPS, which worked out to 10% below league average (90 OPS+). He had the advantage of the extremely favorable hitting conditions in Coors Field for his home games, and that helped him, but his road numbers were dreadful.
In his last year in Colorado (2024), he batted .328 at home with an .888 OPS, while he hit just .214 on the road with a .571 OPS. It was a pretty similar story in each year of his time there.
But defensively, he was aces, including winning the Gold Glove at second in 2022.
