MLB Rumors: 10 Teams Interested in Former MLB Stolen Base King
The World Baseball Classic was full of thrills and chills for baseball fans around the world. And most players were simply there to represent their country. But in some cases, free agent players were also hoping to make an impression and win themselves a major league job. That appears to be the case for MLB's former stolen base king Jon Berti.
The 36-year-old free agent played for Italy in the WBC, and all he did was post a 1.132 OPS. Now he has 10 major league teams interested in signing him.

Insider Jon Morosi tells us that Berti's versatility, and ability to steal a base at a moment's notice, has many teams interested. Morosi says that Berti "intends to sign with a contender that needs him to play multiple positions."
Italy manager Francisco Cervelli on his former teammate Jon Berti:

“I have a lot of respect for that guy. His brains are what stood out the most. He was a bench player when I met him and he turned into a starter. He’s a player and that’s why he’s playing second base today.”
Berti played with the Chicago Cubs last season and in 100 at-bats, he hit .210 with a woeful .492 OPS. With a career mark of a .690 OPS, let's just say that nobody believes that his 1.132 mark from the WBC will transfer over to the majors this season.
But he's a guy with a ton of speed, who can and has played every position on the field, save for catcher and first base (yes, he even found himself on the mound four times for the Cubs last season). He got into 25 games with the New York Yankees in 2024. Up until last season, he was in the high-90s in percentile in sprint speed.
Back in 2022, with the Miami Marlins, Berti led all of baseball with 41 stolen bases, in only 102 games (404 plate appearances). Through his eight-year career, he has 108 steals and a .333 on-base percentage, with a .256 average.
