Brewers to Hand Out 8-Year Deal To Minor Leaguer with Only 3 Games Above Double-A

The Milwaukee Brewers are breaking the mold. While many teams around the majors are locking up their young stars to big-money, long-term deals shortly after their arrival in the big leagues, the Brew Crew are getting in on the action even sooner.

They're about to sign a minor league prospect who hadn't even played above Double-A entering this season to a big eight-year extension.

It's an eight-year, $51M deal with two club options with "escalators."

Pratt was drafted in the 6th round of the 2023 MLB Draft, and is the No. 4 prospect in the Brewers' system, per MLB Pipeline. The 21-year-old shortstop hasn't had any eye-popping success at the minor league level just yet, batting .238 with a .691 OPS last season at AA in Biloxi, in 120 games. He had eight homers and 31 stolen bases. As a 20-year-old, however, his 107 wRC+ (equivalent to OPS+) was the fourth-best at that age in Double-A.

He was also a minor league Gold Glove winner in 2024.

At spring training this past month, he hit .294 with a .405 on-base percentage and two stolen bases. He had a .699 OPS.  He's played his first three games at Triple-A this month, going 4-for-15 with a steal.

The Brewers, however, are obviously enamoured with Pratt, and are ready to hand him an eight-year commitment.

MLB Pipeline says, "His combination of contact and defense gives him a solid floor and a fighting shot to be Milwaukee’s shortstop of the future." That's saying something, as their top two prospects, Jesús Made and Luis Peña, are also middle infielders, just two and three years younger.
