3 Potential Landing Spots for Free Agent Marcell Ozuna
With exactly 100 home runs in the last three years, and the durability to play at least 145 games each year, Marcell Ozuna is an under-the-radar bat still remaining on the free agent market. He's strictly a DH, but teams looking for some power could be looking to take a chance on the 35-year-old.
Last season was not his best, with just 21 homers and a .756 OPS, but the two previous years he posted an OPS over .900 and was right around the 40-HR, 100-RBI mark each season.
Let's have a look at three potential landing spots for Ozuna, as spring training camps quickly approach.
Could the Pirates add their 3rd good bat of the offseason in Ozuna?
Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates made a big attempt to sign slugger Eugenio Suarez in free agency, but the Cincinnati Reds won that bidding (one year, $7 million) this past weekend. The Bucs have already been surprisingly active this offseason, trading for power-packed second sacker Brandon Lowe and adding Ryan O'Hearn in free agency.
Insider Robert Murray says that "if they have money to spend there, do they now pivot to Marcell Ozuna?... He's not going to provide you much defensively, but offensively, a really good power threat. If you can get him for one year for around a similar dollar value as Suarez, that would be a good move to make."
Minnesota Twins
The Twins could use another bat (let's face it, they can use a lot of things), but, as Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report writes, "the opportunity to buy low on Marcell Ozuna and potentially flip him at the trade deadline could become an appealing option for a team clearly focused on retooling." They've already pulled off a similar move this winter in signing Josh Bell.
San Diego Padres
With a hole at first base, and the inability (or unwillingness) to bring back Luis Arraez, the Friars may move Gavin Sheets to 1B, opening up DH for the likes of someone like Ozuna.
