Yankees Pitcher Heading Overseas To Play In Japan

New York Yankees pitcher Allan Winans reacts during 2025 game.

The New York Yankees granted right handed pitcher Allan Winans his release so he can pursue an opportunity in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball, per reporting from Joel Sherman.

It is a clean break that helps both sides, since Winans was not guaranteed a long runway on the 40 man roster and the overseas market can offer him a better role and better earning power than bouncing between Triple A and the majors.

Last season, Winans posted a phenomenal 1.63 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, with 105 strikeouts across 99.1 innings and 21 appearances (18 starts). He also had a 12-1 record.

Allan Winans headed to Japan after Yankees release

Multiple reports tied Winans to Japan quickly, including a report that he is finalizing a deal with the Seibu Lions. If that is the landing spot, it is a fresh start for a 30 year old who has dominated at the top minor league level but has not translated it consistently in the big leagues.

Winans’ profile makes the move make sense. MLB Trade Rumors noted that his release also opens a roster spot for New York, and pointed to his strong Triple A track record compared with his rougher major league results. The same report also explained why the velocity gap that can hurt a pitcher in MLB is often less punishing in NPB, which is one reason command focused arms sometimes thrive there.

What this means for New York Yankees pitching depth

From the Yankees’ side, it is essentially a depth subtraction that clears flexibility. Winans was useful insurance but he was also out of minor league options, which made him a tricky fit during an offseason where New York is still juggling rotation health and bullpen construction.
