MLB Rumors: Red Sox Reveal Their Top Priority Still This Offseason
Even with a middle of the order boost on the way, multiple reports say Boston is still hunting another impact bat, and the name sitting at the top of the board is still Alex Bregman.
One league source told The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey that re-signing him remains a priority, even if the market has gotten a whole lot messier with other teams jumping into the mix.
Ken Rosenthal echoed that idea, writing that Bregman “still appears” to be the Red Sox’s No. 1 target, partly because of the defensive stability he gives them compared to Rafael Devers at third.
But if the bidding heats up to the point where Boston gets priced out, the pivot plan is already being floated, and it starts with Bo Bichette.
Why Bo Bichette becomes the fallback if Bregman goes to Toronto
McCaffrey reported that if Bregman signs with the Toronto Blue Jays, the Red Sox are expected to push harder for Bichette with the intent of playing him at second base.
“The Red Sox remain engaged with third baseman Alex Bregman about a return to Boston, as well, with club officials remaining hopeful — but not necessarily either optimistic or pessimistic — at this juncture.”

The longer Bregman’s decision drags, the more likely it is that other dominoes fall and wipe out the clean alternatives.
In his first season in Boston, Bregman posted a .273/.360/.462 triple-slash line, with 18 home runs, 62 RBIs, and 64 runs scored across 114 games played, while also earning an All-Star selection.
Boston’s offseason is strong, but they’re not acting like it’s enough yet
Contreras is a real add. He gives them right-handed thump, he can handle first base while Triston Casas works back, and he can slide into a shared first base and DH mix when the roster is fully healthy. But Boston clearly doesn’t view him as the finish line.
The whole point of this push is to stack one more difference-maker into a lineup that already has young talent coming, and to do it without getting complacent just because they made the first move.

After acquiring Contreras “the Red Sox are expected to continue pursuing offensive via free agency and trade.”

That’s why Bregman staying is still the best outcome for them. If they can pair Contreras with Bregman, Boston can sell itself as a roster that’s built to win right now.
