MLB News: Giants Sign Free Agent Starter Coming Off 2.18 ERA

The San Francisco Giants had been looking for more depth for their starting rotation, and on New Year's Eve, they found it, by signing 31-year-old nine-year veteran Tyler Mahle.

Mahle made an impressive comeback last season with the Texas Rangers, after having most of the 2023 and 2024 seasons wiped out due to Tommy John surgery. He posted a strong 2.18 ERA for Texas in 16 starts over 86.2 innings. Only Nathan Eovaldi, Trevor Rogers and Paul Skenes had better ERAs among pitchers who made at least 15 starts in 2025.

But it was another injury-plagued campaign for the right-hander Mahle, who wound up on the IL for more than three months due to right shoulder fatigue.

The Rangers did not make him a qualifying offer after the season, letting him go to free agency.

If he can just stay healthy, there's a pretty good pitcher in there. Since 2020, per mlb.com, he's compiled a 3.61 ERA across 473 1/3 innings.

The Giants also signed starter Adrian Houser earlier this month, to a two-year, $22 million deal. Houser and Mahle join a strong San Francisco starting staff that's headed up by Logan Webb, Robbie Ray and Landen Roupp.
