MLB Rumors: One Astros Player Is a Hot Commodity in the Trade Market
The Astros need a controllable starter, they want a left handed bat, and they are staring at a thin center field market where their own player suddenly looks like one of the best options available.
That combination has pushed Jake Meyers into the middle of the winter rumor cycle.
Jake Meyers trade talks give Astros flexibility
Reports from multiple insiders say the Astros are open to a Jake Meyers trade if it brings back a controllable major league starter. Meyers is coming off a quietly strong 2025 season, hitting .292 with a .354 on base percentage and .727 OPS in 104 games while playing his usual steady defense in center.
Houston is operating close to its payroll comfort zone and just lost Framber Valdez in free agency, so flipping a projected bench outfielder for a starter with term might be one of the cleaner ways to restructure the roster without pushing past ownership’s spending line.

The risk is that Meyers’ breakout came after years of inconsistent offense, and some teams could be wary of paying for a level of production that may not fully stick.
Which teams could chase a Jake Meyers trade this winter?
Because there are so few true center fielders available in free agency or on the trade block, Meyers is drawing interest from a long list of potential buyers.
Insiders have pointed to the Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets and Tampa Bay Rays as logical fits, and clubs like the Baltimore Orioles, Arizona Diamondbacks and Kansas City Royals are also in the market for outfield help.

The Mets are considered a suitor for Astros OF Jake Meyers if he were to be traded this offseason, per @Ken_Rosenthal pic.twitter.com/UlhXTu5bXa
All of them could view Meyers as an upgrade in center rather than patching things together with corner bats or glove only options. There is even speculation that a contender such as the Los Angeles Dodgers could get involved if they see him as a way to deepen their outfield while moving a young starter.
If the Astros truly believe Zach Cole, Jacob Melton or another internal option can grow into a regular, then a Jake Meyers trade that brings back a solid rotation piece becomes very tempting.
