MLB Rumors: Big Update On Bo Bichette's Free Agency

Bo Bichette is doing the smart thing and, honestly, the inevitable thing. 

Multiple reports say he’s now telling interested teams he’s willing to move to second base, a notable pivot for a player who has been a shortstop basically his entire baseball life.

From the Toronto Blue Jays’ point of view, that flexibility can cut both ways. On one hand, it’s a clean way to keep Bichette’s bat in the lineup even if roster math changes. On the other hand, it potentially creates more bidders, and more bidders usually means a tougher path to a discount hometown deal. 

Why Bichette’s 2B Flexibility Widens the Bidding

Second base is a softer landing spot for a lot of shortstops as they age, and it’s also a position where teams will tolerate “fine” defense if the bat is loud. For clubs that already employ a legit shortstop, Bichette’s willingness to slide over removes the biggest obstacle to adding him. 

You no longer have to blow up your infield alignment just to justify the signing. You can sell it as improving the lineup while keeping the defensive spine intact.

It also changes the conversation for teams that have been waiting on other moves to shake loose. A front office can tell itself, “We’re still set at short, but we can still fit this player.” That is a very different market than “we only want him if our current shortstop plan collapses.” 

And once that door opens, it only takes one aggressive team to push the numbers into the range everyone else has to match.

What This Means for the Toronto Blue Jays’ Next Move

If Toronto wants Bichette back, the path probably gets more complicated, not less. The Blue Jays can still sell history, comfort, and the idea of finishing what this core started. But if the market now includes more contenders who can plug Bichette in at second base without drama, the pitch has to be stronger than vibes.
