Alex Bregman to NL Team is 'A Done Deal': Report
We're getting wildly conflicting reports from a couple of duelling sports insiders on the status of the pursuit of one of the top free agents, Alex Bregman. We heard recently that the Arizona Diamondbacks had suddenly entered the fray for the third baseman.
Dan Bickley of the Bickley & Marotta show on Arizona Sports 98.7 insists it's "just a matter of time" before the D-Backs sign Bregman. He explained why:
"It's a matter of time before (the Diamondbacks) get Alex Bregman. I think that's a done deal to be honest with you," @danbickley says on @Bickley_Marotta.

He added Bregman wants to live in Arizona year-round the same way Corbin Burnes did last offseason. pic.twitter.com/1y8KnXz35D
"It's a matter of time before (the Diamondbacks) get Alex Bregman. I think that's a done deal to be honest with you," said Bickley.
"When they signed Corbin Burnes (last off-season on the open market), I had a very good source tell me that Alex Bregman, as well, was begging them for a (free agent) contract. Alex Bregman wants to live in Arizona the same way Corbin Burnes did. And he's about to give the Diamondbacks a discount to do so. He's going to be on this baseball team."
Bregman has been 'begging' for D-Backs to sign him, says insider
The only fly in the ointment, says Bickley, is whether the Snakes can trade second baseman Ketel Marte beforehand, to free up some money on the payroll.
The three-time All-Star, Marte is going into the second year of a six-year, $112M deal. It comes with a $19M AAV. Bregman will be asking for much, more than that, well into the $30M+ range or higher, so it'll be interesting to see how that shakes out.
Alex Bregman signing in Arizona is also... A 'longshot' ?
HOWEVER... Another Phoenix insider, John Gambadoro, is hearing something completely the opposite: He calls the D-Backs landing Bregman "a longshot."
The Diamondbacks have not gotten a package that is good enough to make a Ketel Marte trade, and a potential Alex Bregman signing is a longshot.@Gambo987 has more on @BurnsAndGambo. pic.twitter.com/GJnWyRGEFO

Gambo says that any Bregman signing is "1,000%" tied to any potential trade of Marte.
He explains that because Arizona has not received a trade offer for Marte that has moved the needle for them, it's unlikely they deal him, and the fallout of that is an unlikely marriage with Bregman.
Why the Diamondbacks can't keep Marte & sign Bregman
"It's a longshot... You can't keep Marte and pay him his salary, and then sign Bregman and pay him his salary, and you've still got four guys making over $60M who are going to start the season on the injured list."
The money that Bregman is seeking "is not in the wheelhouse of the Arizona Diamondbacks," said Gambadoro.
The lack of a Marte trade is also one of the reasons the Snakes haven't been able to do some other things this offseason, says Gambo. The team also needs a closer and another arm for the rotation.
"To this point, they have not gotten a package that is deemed good enough to make a Ketel Marte trade."
Is there any chance whatsoever of keeping Marte AND signing Bregman? "That can't happen."
