2 Teams Now Top Suitors to Sign Alex Bregman Away From Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox still have Alex Bregman as a priority to re-sign in free agency, but a couple of familiar suitors have re-engaged recently, and are now two top teams angling to steal the BoSox team leader away from Beantown.
According to numerous reports, the Chicago Cubs, who were interested in Bregman last offseason, are back on the bandwagon.
Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma write in The Athletic that Bregman's name "stands out" as a target the Cubs are looking at to boost their offence.
After a failed bid to sign Bregman last spring training, the Cubs have shown renewed interest in the All-Star third baseman, according to sources briefed on the clubs off-season planning.
With Kyle Tucker appearing set to take his talents elsewhere this winter, Chicago will be looking to replace that offense somehow, and Bregman is the target.
The Cubs offered Bregman a four-year, $115 million deal in free agency before the season, but he ultimately chose Boston's shorter three-year, $120M deal with an opt-out to re-enter the market this winter.
Tigers join the Cubs back in the race to land Alex Bregman in free agency
The Detroit Tigers made a spirited pitch to land Bregman last winter, and they're back in the mix, as well. AJ Hinch, Bregman's longtime manager in Houston, is still the dugout boss in Detroit, giving them an upper hand.
They offered the Gold Glover and three-time All-Star a six-year deal worth at least $170 million last time around. Jon Heyman of the New York Post says the Tigers are planning to pursue him for a second straight year.
Third base was a disaster for the Tigers in the 2025 season, as they ranked dead last with the worst OPS in the American League from that spot on the field. Zach McKinstry, despite an "All-Star" first half, dropped off a cliff in the second half, and the Tigers ended up using a number of different players at the position.
Bregman would be a true All-Star solution.
Hinch will try to woo him once again this offseason.
