MLB Trade Rumors: Ketel Marte to Blue Jays? Insider Suggests Hefty Price Tag
Rumors have been swirling around Arizona Diamondbacks' three-time All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte. As the team looks to reset and fill some holes, Marte is certainly their most valuable trade asset, and could bring a massive return. And while insider Jon Morosi says the D-Backs "are actively listening" and it's about a 50-50 chance he gets dealt, we're also hearing more now about what it might cost to land him.

The Toronto Blue Jays are said to be interested in Marte. Most likely, in particular, if they can't re-sign Bo Bichette. Marte is one of the best second basemen in baseball, both on the defensive and offensive side of the ball. Should the Jays acquire him, he would form a formidable run-prevention pairing up the middle with shortstop Andres Gimenez.
And did we mention Marte's bat? He has a career .281 batting mark and .823 OPS (with an .893 OPS this past season). He's gotten on base at a tremendous clip of better than .370 in each of the last two seasons, in which he was rewarded with the Silver Slugger Award each year.
So what would it cost the Blue Jays to acquire the star second sacker? Plenty. Insider Steve Phillips joined TSN's First Up on Wednesday and laid out a potential hefty price tag that Toronto might have to pay:
(The Diamondbacks) need first base and third base at the major league level right now—remember, they traded away Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez, so they've got some holes to fill. And if they create (another) hole at second base, they're likely going to want to fill that hole (too). So, you could potentially look at it taking Addison Barger and Ernie Clement for Ketel Marte... That would not be unrealistic for them to ask.
No doubt, a bit of prospect capital would have to be included as well.
Marte is signed through the 2030 season, with an option for 2031, at an AAV number (about $19 million) that is significantly less than what it would take to re-sign Bichette in free agency (he is expected to command a $200 million long-term deal).
But that Barger/Clement package would be a difficult price to pay for the Blue Jays, as both developed into key components of the team, and beloved players in the city. And without either of them, a run into the World Series most likely would not have happened.
Lots of machinations going on in both the free agent and trade markets, as teams jockey for some of the biggest names available. The Blue Jays are right in the thick of it.
