MLB Rumors: Mets Eyeing Top Closer Replacement in Free Agency

San Diego Padres closer Robert Suarez reacts during 2025 game.

The New York Mets are preparing for every outcome as contract talks continue with free-agent closer Edwin Diaz, and they’ve now zeroed in on a strong backup option: Robert Suarez

According to The Athletic’s Will Sammon, the Mets have contacted the camps for both Suarez and Devin Williams “multiple times recently,” indicating real urgency to solidify the back end of their bullpen.

Suarez emerging as the most realistic fit

At 35, Suarez is older than Diaz or Williams, but that may actually work in the Mets’ favor. A shorter contract, projected around three years and $48 million, aligns perfectly with the front office’s preference to avoid locking in long-term money for a volatile position.

Suarez opted out of $16 million and two remaining years with the San Diego Padres, confident that his 2.97 ERA, 27.9 percent strikeout rate, and 40 saves last season would command a top-tier market.

With power stuff that touches 99 mph and strong postseason numbers, he profiles as one of the most reliable high-leverage arms available.

New York preparing for life after Diaz?

The Mets still want Diaz back, but contract length remains a sticking point. The team offered him a qualifying offer and continues negotiations, yet both sides appear far apart.

If Diaz ultimately signs elsewhere, Suarez becomes the best pivot, as he’s cheaper, still dominant, and available without trading away assets.

Even if Diaz returns, adding Suarez could form one of baseball’s most intimidating late-inning duos.

The Mets have made major moves already this offseason, including trading Brandon Nimmo for Marcus Semien, and all signs suggest David Stearns isn’t done shaping a contender.
