MLB Rumors: Marlins Talking to Big Free Agent Name
Multiple reports from The Athletic indicate Miami has shown interest in the free-agent right-hander as they look to make rotation upgrades and consider a more aggressive spending approach than in past offseasons.
Miami exploring bold rotation upgrade with King
King, 30, rejected a $22.025 million qualifying offer from the San Diego Padres and is positioned for a significant multi-year deal after excelling since transitioning into a full-time starter in late 2023.
He has posted a 2.93 ERA with a 27.4% strikeout rate across 53 starts over the past two seasons, which is frontline production that would immediately elevate a rotation already featuring Sandy Alcantara, Edward Cabrera and Eury Perez.

Adding King could also give Miami leverage to trade from its deep pitching pool to address pressing offensive needs at first base, third base or right field.
Spending push raises questions and opportunity
The Marlins’ interest comes as the team faces scrutiny over revenue-sharing spending requirements, with reports suggesting they could risk a grievance if they continue underspending relative to league standards.
Miami’s projected CBT payroll sits around $70 million, well below the average, and signing King would show a willingness to compete financially with larger-market clubs.
It would also be a symbolic reunion, as Miami originally drafted King in 2016 before trading him to the New York Yankees the following year.

Whether the Marlins will truly outbid more aggressive teams remains uncertain. The Chicago Cubs are also reportedly pursuing King, and Miami would be forced to surrender its third-highest pick in the 2026 draft due to his rejection of the qualifying offer.
