MLB Rumors: New Favorite Emerges in the Framber Valdez Sweepstakes

Houston Astros starting pitcher Framber Valdez walks off the mound during 2025 game.

Momentum appears to be shifting toward Queens in the Framber Valdez sweepstakes.

Multiple insiders say the New York Mets are viewed as the current favorite to land the two time All Star left hander, a move that would instantly reshape their rotation after a disastrous 2025 season.

Why Framber Valdez Mets pursuit is gaining steam

MLB insider Hector Gomez reported that the Mets are the favorites to sign Framber Valdez and could be prepared to offer a six year, $200 million contract.

The timing comes days after the Toronto Blue Jays secured Dylan Cease and removed themselves from the bidding, potentially giving New York a clearer path.

Valdez has been one of the most consistent frontline arms in baseball over the last five years, posting a 3.66 ERA with 187 strikeouts across 31 starts last season for the Houston Astros, and ranking among the league leaders in innings, wins, and ground ball rate.

How Framber Valdez fits the New York Mets rotation plans

The Mets desperately need stability at the top of their rotation after injuries and inconsistency derailed 2025. Veterans like Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea struggled, and young arms such as Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong were pushed into roles earlier than expected.

Adding a durable lefty with elite ground ball ability makes sense, especially after New York acquired Gold Glove second baseman Marcus Semien to improve infield defense.

Landing Valdez would also give the Mets the opportunity to explore trades for Kodai Senga, who has been mentioned in trade rumors recently.
