MLB Rumors: 5 Reds Players Who Aren't Expected To Return Next Season

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Emilio Pagan celebrates after 2025 game.

The Cincinnati Reds capped off a surprising and inspiring 2025 season with a magical playoff push that ended in the Wild Card round.

Despite falling to the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati exceeded expectations under manager Terry Francona. However, as Mark Powell of Fansided notes, the Reds now face a crucial offseason full of difficult decisions, including parting ways with several key contributors from their postseason roster.

5 Reds Unlikely to Return After 2025 Postseason Run

Among those expected to depart is Nick Martinez, whose $21 million salary and 4.46 ERA make a return improbable unless he takes a steep pay cut. Veteran reliever Emilio Pagán, coming off a career year with 32 saves and a 2.88 ERA, has priced himself out of Cincinnati’s budget as he heads into free agency seeking a multi-year deal.

Outfielder Austin Hays, who posted a .768 OPS but carries a $12 million mutual option for 2026, is also likely gone with younger, cheaper options like Spencer Steer and Will Benson ready to compete for his spot.

Two other veterans appear destined to move on as well.

Wade Miley, 38, struggled to a 6.75 ERA and is reportedly considering retirement after his second stint with the Reds. Meanwhile, Justin Wilson could also see his time end as the team restructures a bullpen that faltered late in the year.

With payroll constraints and a deep crop of young talent, GM Nick Krall will likely use the offseason to retool around rising stars like Elly De La Cruz and Hunter Greene, ensuring this year’s success becomes a building block rather than a one-off.
