Former All-Star Pitcher Elects Free Agency After Strong Season

New York Mets pitcher Chris Devenski walks off the field during 2025 game.

Chris Devenski’s time with the New York Mets has come to an end.

The veteran right-hander elected free agency after being designated for assignment recently to clear a roster spot for Sean Manaea’s return from the paternity list.

Devenski, 34, quietly delivered a strong showing in limited action for New York. Across 13 appearances, he posted a 2.16 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in 16.2 innings, striking out 14 and walking just five.

That success mirrored his work in Triple-A Syracuse, where he maintained a 3.35 ERA across 35 outings. While his role remained inconsistent, 2025 marked something of a rebound for the former All-Star, who has struggled since leaving the Houston Astros after 2019.

Despite his recent flashes, Devenski has bounced around the league in recent years, making stops with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Angels, Tampa Bay Rays, and now the Mets.

Over 10 big league seasons, he owns a 27–22 record, a 3.91 ERA, and more than 400 career innings. His decision to hit the open market now gives contenders a chance to take a low-risk flyer on an experienced reliever with postseason pedigree.
