Astros Pitcher Undergoes 2nd Tommy John Surgery in 3 Years
The Houston Astros suffered through a rash of pitching injuries in 2025 that helped torpedo their season. Now, even though the campaign is over, the injury news just keeps on coming.
Starter Luis Garcia has undergone his second Tommy John surgery in three years, the Astros have announced.

His newest elbow surgery included a reconstruction of his UCL and a repair of the flexor tendon in his forearm.
The 28-year-old made just six starts in 2023, and missed the entire 2024 season after his first Tommy John. He was only able to make two starts this past year, in early September, but left in the second inning of his second start with right elbow discomfort.
It's a brutal blow for Garcia, who will now miss the entire 2026 season as well, pretty much wiping out four straight seasons for him. '26 was also his final year of team control.
Garcia came to the majors and immediately showed himself to be a prime member of the Astros' starting staff, making 56 starts across 2021 and 2022, compiling a 26-16 record with a 3.60 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP over 312⅔ innings.
Whether Garcia can return in 2027 as any former semblance of that pitcher is unknown, as he'll have made just eight major league starts over four years.
The 'Stros pitching woes continue to compound, as Hayden Wesneski, Ronel Blanco, and Brandon Walter also underwent Tommy John surgeries in 2025, and Jose Urquidy in 2024.
