MLB Rumors: Surprising AL Team Linked To Alex Bregman This Offseason

A surprising American League team has entered the Alex Bregman sweepstakes: the Los Angeles Angels

According to Mark Powell of FanSided, the Angels could be a dark horse destination for the Boston Red Sox third baseman, who is widely expected to opt out of the final two years and $80 million of his current deal this offseason.

Bregman’s three-year, $120 million contract with Boston included annual opt-outs, and he’s reportedly seeking a long-term commitment rather than another short-term, high-value pact. While a return to Boston remains the favorite scenario, Powell notes that the Angels “make more sense than most realize” given their desperate need to upgrade at third base.

Angels Emerge as Surprise Suitor for Alex Bregman

The Angels’ infield depth has been a glaring weakness, especially with Anthony Rendon’s lingering contract and injuries. As Powell explains, the team “didn’t get much production out of their third basemen last season,” and with Yoán Moncada and Luis Rengifo both pending free agents, the position remains wide open.

Signing Bregman, a proven All-Star and elite defender, would give Mike Trout a legitimate lineup partner as he enters the twilight of his prime. For owner Arte Moreno, who has a history of splashy, headline-grabbing signings, pursuing Bregman would fit the franchise’s pattern of bold offseason moves, even if it means spending beyond reason.

Still, Bregman’s future is far from settled.

He’s spoken positively about his time in Boston and could negotiate a restructured, long-term deal to stay with the Red Sox, who freed up payroll flexibility after trading Rafael Devers

But with multiple teams, including the Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, and now the Los Angeles Angels, expected to be in the mix, his free agency could become one of the winter’s most intriguing storylines.
