NY Mets DFA 2025 Starting Outfielder, Former 25-HR Hitter

A broken tibia left him out for five months this season, and his recent return hasn't impressed. Now, Jose Siri has been designated for assignment by the New York Mets.

Siri can provide elite speed, a strong arm, and excellent range in center field, which is why he won the starting CF job for the Mets to open the 2025 season. However, after just 10 games, he broke his leg, and his season went up in smoke. He was batting only .050 (1-for-20) at the time of the injury as well, so it's hard to say if he would have retained his starting role.

He recently came back and appeared in six games, though the leg injury seemed to have an impact on his consistency in the outfield.

Siri was a 25-home run hitter for the Tampa Bay Rays as recently as 2023, in just 101 games. But his frustrating inability to get on base limited his impact the following season in Tampa, posting just a .187 average and a .255 on-base percentage.

He finished his limited 16-game stint with the Mets this year with a .063/.167/.125 slash line.

While he does have the right to refuse an outright assignment to the minors once he clears waivers, it's possible that Siri might want to stick around the organization, on the off-chance there's a need in the outfield or on the bench in the playoffs for the Mets (if they make it) due to some unforeseen, unfortunate injury luck.

The Mets are currently one game up on the Cincinnati Reds and Arizona Diamondbacks for the third and final Wild Card spot in the National League.

Overall, in 1222 plate appearances in the majors, Siri has a .206 average with a poor .263 on-base, and a .663 OPS (85 OPS+). He does have 54 homers and 45 stolen bases.

If his leg is at full strength next season, he could still provide some high-end speed and defense for a team looking for those skill sets.
