Mariners Claim Pitcher Off Waivers After Impressive Stint With Mets

New York Mets pitcher Jose Castillo walks off the field during 2025 game.

The Seattle Mariners have added left-handed reliever José Castillo off waivers from the New York Mets.

To clear a roster spot, Seattle designated fellow left-hander Joe Jacques for assignment.

Castillo, 29, has pitched in 21 games this season between the Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks, carrying a 4.98 ERA across 21.2 innings. His stint in New York was far steadier than in Arizona, where he posted an 11.37 ERA.

With the Mets, he worked to a sharp 2.35 ERA in 16 outings, striking out 19 in 15.1 innings while relying heavily on his sinker and slider combination.

Seattle already had three lefties in its bullpen (Gabe Speier, Caleb Ferguson, and Tayler Saucedo), but Castillo’s strong ground-ball tendencies and strikeout ability made him worth a claim.

The Venezuelan native, who represented his country in the 2017 World Baseball Classic, owns a career 4.50 ERA across 62 major league innings. Castillo also comes with club control through arbitration in 2026, making him more than just a short-term depth piece for the Mariners.

Jacques, 30, has struggled in Triple-A Tacoma with a 6.93 ERA over 24.2 innings, though his underlying metrics suggest some bad luck contributed. He previously spent time with the Boston Red Sox and Diamondbacks, appearing in 25 major league games over two seasons.

With Jacques out of options next year, Seattle opted to move on rather than risk a roster crunch in 2026.
