Breaking: Houston Astros Get Devastating News on Yordan Alvarez
This is a devastating blow for the Houston Astros, who are in a neck-and-neck battle with the Seattle Mariners for top spot in the AL West Division. Yordan Alvarez is likely out for the rest of the season after suffering an ugly ankle injury in last night's game. The incident occurred as he stepped on home plate to score a run in the first inning.

The Houston Astros expect slugger Yordan Alvarez to miss the rest of the regular season with his severe left ankle sprain, but are hopeful that he can return for the postseason.

Alvarez is just the latest star on a contender to suffer a key injury this month.
It's been called a "severe" ankle sprain, and a significant injury by manager Joe Espada.
Joe Espada says Yordan Alvarez has a significant left ankle sprain.

Espada stopped short of saying if Alvarez will return this season or miss the rest of the season.

Alvarez is in a walking boot, and while Espada wouldn't confirm if he is definitely out for the season, a severe ankle sprain is certainly more than a two-week injury. Even the least significant ankle sprain, Grade 1, will keep a player out for typically 4-6 weeks.
It's been a frustrating season for the Astros slugger, who has only managed to play in 48 games. He missed nearly four months—100 games—with a fracture in his hand.
Since returning from that in late August, he was batting .369 with a 1.024 OPS in 18 games going into Monday's action. Needless to say, Alvarez's absence leaves a massive hole in the Astros lineup (...again).
He has a .297 career average across seven seasons, with an incredible .961 OPS, with a .389 on-base and a .573 slug.
With the Astros one game back in the loss column from the Mariners, and a huge three-game set coming up this weekend against Seattle, this does not bode well for the team in the division race. In addition, Houston is only three games up on the Texas Rangers, whom they face two more times this week before the Seattle series.
