Top 3 Destinations for Gold Glove, Silver Slugger Nathaniel Lowe

In a somewhat shocking move this past week, the Washington Nationals DFA'd former star first baseman Nathaniel Lowe. But after four consecutive solid seasons for the Texas Rangers from 2021 through 2024, there will definitely be interest in the one-time Gold Glover and Silver Slugger at first base.

Any team will be able to sign Lowe for a pro-rated portion of the major league minimum, as he is still earning the balance of his $10.3 million salary from Washington for the rest of this season.

And at the top of that list of suitors is a team that's been searching for an answer at first base all season long. Let's have a look at the top 3 destinations for Lowe in free agency.

Boston Red Sox

After Triston Casas went down with an ugly leg injury back on May 2nd, it set off a sordid chain of events that led to Rafael Devers getting traded, while the team has been unable to truly fill the first base void with a legit offensive option ever since. As soon as he clears waivers, Lowe will be the Red Sox's most likely destination.

"The Sox are intrigued by the fact they could catch 'lightning in a bottle' at a low cost over the final six weeks of the season with Lowe if a change of scenery and some tweaks lead to increased output," writes Chris Cotillo in MassLive. "Teams pursuing Lowe will have to try to woo him with opportunity, both when it comes to playing time and potential championship contention." The Red Sox would seem to have both available for Lowe.

Houston Astros

The Astros have had a heck of a time trying to fill the first base void the past few years. First, they signed former MVP Jose Abreu to a big free agent deal in 2023, but his production immediately fell off a cliff, and he was DFA'd early last season. They tried again this past winter, signing the former slugger Christian Walker to a similar three-year costly deal, but, like Abreu (though not quite to the same extreme), he has been a big disappointment. Perhaps bringing in the lefty bat of Lowe to platoon with Walker would be a good move for the Astros. But would Lowe be happy in a platoon situation?

Texas Rangers

Is there a homecoming in order? Certainly, the Rangers have to be happy with what they're getting out of Rowdy Tellez at first base since he was picked up following his release from the Seattle Mariners last month. In 18 games with Texas, Tellez has batted .279 with an .822 OPS and a couple of homers. But realistically, do they really believe Tellez can keep up this Rowdy pace? His career average is .233, and he hasn't posted an OPS over .800 in five years. And they relieved Jake Burger of his regular first base duties over a month ago. Do they solidify the position by trying to bring back Lowe?
