Red Sox DFA Veteran After Signing Nathaniel Lowe
After Triston Casas went down early in the season, the Boston Red Sox were really strapped on how to fill the void at first base. Rafael Devers balked at it (and was subsequently traded), so they settled on major league journeyman Abraham Toro.
He did a nice job for the first two months filling in, hitting over .280 with an OPS in the high .700s. But the last month or two? Not so much. Toro has hit .147 with a .447 OPS over the last four weeks. And going back farther, hitting .194 with a .524 OPS in his last 49 games.
Now, the BoSox have proven first baseman Nathaniel Lowe ready to take over at first. With that, Toro will be thanked for his contributions... And designated for assignment.

Thank you to Toro for what he did after Casas went down. It won’t be forgotten. But when you’re the worst hitter in the sport for a two month stretch, it was time. pic.twitter.com/3SdpUiX2lk
Toro, 28, has played for five teams in his career, also including the Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners, Oakland A's and Milwaukee Brewers.
He has a career .224 batting mark, .644 OPS and a .979 fielding percentage, playing mainly at third base, second base, and first. He was a solid .994 at first base in 67 games for Boston this season.
