Boston Red Sox DFA Flamethrower Pitcher

Boston Red Sox pitcher Jorge Alcala walks off the field during 2025 game.

The Boston Red Sox have officially designated reliever Jorge Alcala for assignment following a string of late-game collapses.

The move comes one day after Alcala surrendered three runs in just one-third of an inning against the Kansas City Royals, turning an 8-1 lead into a stressful 8-5 finish. Right-hander Isaiah Campbell has been recalled from Triple-A Worcester to take Alcala’s spot on the roster.

Alcala’s Collapse Seals His Fate in Boston

Acquired from the Minnesota Twins in June, Alcala initially impressed with a 0.69 ERA over his first 13 innings for Boston. But his command and home run issues returned with a vengeance. Over his final 3.1 innings, Alcala gave up five earned runs on eight hits, including four home runs, and issued four walks.

Despite a 3.31 ERA in 19 appearances with the Red Sox, the underlying numbers told a different story, and manager Alex Cora confirmed the team needed a change.

Isaiah Campbell Rejoins Bullpen Amid Reshuffle

Campbell, 27, returns to the majors after posting a 4.17 ERA in 34 outings for Worcester. The former Seattle Mariner has one MLB appearance this season and will serve in a low-leverage role as the Red Sox aim to stabilize their bullpen. With Justin Slaten nearing a return and prospect David Sandlin potentially shifting into relief, Boston is clearly reshaping its late-game options as the postseason push heats up.
