Philadelphia Phillies Sign Free Agent Right-Handed Pitcher

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Jacob Waguespack pitches during 2025 game.

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed right-handed pitcher Jacob Waguespack to a minor league deal and assigned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

While Waguespack is currently on the injured list, the Phillies are taking a low-risk gamble that he could return to health and offer late-season bullpen depth.

Phillies Add Jacob Waguespack as Bullpen Depth

Waguespack was recently released by the Tampa Bay Rays after being designated for assignment in July while injured. Due to league rules, he couldn’t be placed on waivers and was released instead. Tampa remains responsible for the bulk of his $1.3 million salary, with the Phillies only on the hook for a prorated league minimum if he’s called up.

Though the 31-year-old owns a 5.11 ERA in 105.2 career MLB innings, he impressed in Japan and showed promise in the minors with a 2.93 ERA and strong strikeout-to-walk ratios before getting hurt. If he regains health, Waguespack could be a useful depth piece for a Phillies team aiming to stay competitive down the stretch.
