MLB Rumors: Korean Star Slugger Looking To Come To MLB
The former No. 1 KBO draft pick will become a complete free agent at season’s end (meaning no posting fees for MLB teams) after eight seasons in Korea. While this step opens a clear path to the majors, Kang insists it’s simply “one more option” and not a declaration that he’s leaving the KBO.

A Top Korean Bat With Versatility
Since debuting in 2018, Kang has built an impressive resume with a career .304 average, 131 home runs, three All-Star nods, two Gold Gloves, and a Rookie of the Year award. Known primarily as a first baseman and designated hitter, he’s also played the corner outfield and even served as an emergency catcher.
MLB insider Jon Heyman reports that multiple teams are watching closely, especially after Kang’s recent hot streak in August. His market value could be boosted by precedent - fellow Korean free agent Jung Hoo Lee signed a six-year, $113 million deal with the San Francisco Giants in 2024.

Unfinished Business in KBO Before Decision
Despite the buzz, Kang is focused on finishing the 2025 KBO season strong. Injuries have limited him to 62 games this year, but he’s rebounded lately, hitting .359 with three home runs in his last 10 games.
“The agency handles contracts. I need to perform here first,” Kang said. Whether he chooses to stay in Korea, potentially commanding a domestic deal worth around $7.4M, or test MLB waters will depend on his health, performance, and the offers that arrive this offseason.
