MLB Rumors: Insider Reveals How Safe Aaron Boone's Job Is

New York Yankees Manager Aaron Boone walks off the field during 2025 game.

The New York Yankees’ recent skid has fans calling for Aaron Boone’s dismissal, but MLB insider Jon Heyman says that isn’t happening.

Boone, who has managed the Yankees since 2018, signed a three-year, $15 million extension in February and retains the full support of owner Hal Steinbrenner, general manager Brian Cashman, and his players. Heyman stressed that “something cataclysmic” would need to occur for Boone to be replaced after the 2025 season, regardless of playoff results.

Why Boone’s Not on the Hot Seat
While Boone takes his share of criticism for New York’s drop from first place to fighting for a Wild Card spot, Heyman points out that many roster and in-game decisions are dictated by the front office. This structure limits Boone’s autonomy and places more responsibility on Cashman for the team’s flaws, namely, an over-reliance on Aaron Judge and inconsistent fundamentals.

Boone’s job appears secure unless he loses the clubhouse, which insiders say is far from the case.

Potential Replacement Talk Still Exists
Despite the strong backing, some media outlets have floated possible successors if a change ever happens. Former Miami Marlins skipper Skip Schumaker, the 2023 National League Manager of the Year, has been mentioned as a fit.

Schumaker has a track record of getting the most out of underdog rosters and could intrigue the Yankees if they ever move on from Boone. For now, though, Boone’s contract runs through 2027, and all signs point to him remaining in the dugout next season.
