Miami Marlins Claim Former Top-100 Prospect Off Waivers
Outfielder Joey Wiemer is on the move again.
The Miami Marlins have claimed the former top prospect off waivers from the Kansas City Royals and optioned him to Triple-A Jacksonville. Wiemer was designated for assignment by Kansas City after slashing just .182/.291/.312 with nine home runs in Triple-A Omaha this season.

Final Option Year Looms Large for Wiemer
Wiemer, 26, has bounced around since debuting with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2023. Once a top-100 prospect, he’s flashed power, speed, and elite defense across all three outfield spots, but consistent contact has eluded him. He’s particularly struggled against right-handed pitching (.169 AVG in 299 MLB PA), though he’s shown modest success versus lefties with a .263/.295/.481 line.
#10 - Joey Wiemer

Wiemer, 26, is a good Defender but anemic bat. He runs well but has struggled recently at MLB and AAA. He's a solid Pinch-runner/Defensive Replacement.
Good: Above-avg. Defense, Good Runner, 1 Option Year, and Decent Plate Discipline
Possible Fit: Mets pic.twitter.com/UhW6I9in5H
The Marlins will use Wiemer as depth in Jacksonville, but this marks his final minor league option. If he doesn't earn a roster spot next season, he’ll be exposed to waivers once again.
With Miami lacking long-term outfield clarity, Wiemer’s defensive tools and potential platoon value could give him a shot at carving out a role as a fourth outfielder, if the bat rebounds in the final months of 2025.
