8-Year Veteran Outfielder Opts Out Of Deal With Orioles; Elects Free Agency

The Baltimore Orioles announced that veteran outfielder Greg Allen declined a minor-league assignment and elected free agency.

Allen, 32, cleared waivers after being removed from Baltimore’s 40-man roster, ending a short-lived stint that saw him go 0-for-14 in seven games. Signed by the Orioles on August 8 following his release from a Triple-A deal with the Chicago Cubs, Allen was always expected to be a temporary solution as the Orioles prepared to promote top prospect Dylan Beavers.

Allen’s MLB Journey Across Multiple Teams
Allen debuted in the majors with the Cleveland Guardians in 2017 and has played for the San Diego Padres, New York Yankees, and Pittsburgh Pirates across eight MLB seasons. Known for his speed and versatility across all three outfield positions, Allen’s career has largely seen him serve as a fourth or fifth outfielder.

In parts of eight seasons, he’s posted a .227 batting average with 11 home runs and 311 games played. Earlier in 2025, Allen hit .270/.355/.440 in Triple-A with the Cubs.

Looking Ahead for Allen
Now a free agent, Allen can choose his next stop in hopes of returning to the majors. While likely to sign another minor-league deal, he maintains the opportunity to select an organization where he can compete for playing time.
