Breaking: Red Sox Release 2-Time All-Star

In a somewhat surprising move, the Boston Red Sox have followed up their demotion of former two-time All-Star Walker Buehler to the bullpen, by releasing him outright.

Buehler, 31, has struggled for the second straight season since coming back from Tommy John surgery, posting a 5.45 ERA in 112 innings for the Red Sox, after returning last season from a year off, and registering a 5.38 ERA with the LA Dodgers.

He had a couple of nice outings in the postseason last fall in helping the Dodgers to the World Series title, and then signed a one-year, $21.05 million contract with Boston in the winter. But Buehler lost his spot in the Red Sox rotation a week ago, and he felt, at the time, that it was a chance to catch his breath and reset.

"It's obviously disappointing," Buehler said. "It's the first time in my career that I've been in a situation like that, but at the end of the day, the organization and, to a lesser extent, myself, kind of think it's probably the right thing for our group and it gives me an opportunity to kind of reset in some ways."

He made just one relief appearance, earlier this week, and that went about the same way his starts have been going: not well. He surrendered two earned runs in 2.1 innings.

Now, Buehler will have to find another team to "reset" with.

The Red Sox called up top pitching prospect Payton Tolle to take his place on the staff.
