Atlanta Braves Claim Starting Pitcher Off Waivers From Marlins

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Cal Quantrill pitches during 2025 game.

The Atlanta Braves claimed right-handed pitcher Cal Quantrill off waivers from the Miami Marlins, taking on the remainder of his $3.5 million salary.

The move adds short-term depth to Atlanta’s rotation as the team prepares to implement a six-man rotation once Chris Sale returns from a ribcage injury. Quantrill will join the Braves in New York ahead of a series against the New York Mets before facing his former team, Miami, on Monday.

Quantrill’s Track Record and Role

Quantrill, 30, has struggled this season, posting a 5.50 ERA over 24 starts with the Marlins, including an 11.25 ERA in his last three outings. Despite the rough patch, he threw the first immaculate inning of the 2025 season in May against the Tampa Bay Rays.

A former first-round pick (8th overall in 2016), Quantrill has MLB experience with the Cleveland Guardians, Colorado Rockies, and San Diego Padres. He has a career fWAR of 1.9 per 200 innings, primarily serving as a fringy rotation starter, but his veteran presence could help the Braves manage innings while the team evaluates talent for 2026.

Braves Flexibility and Late-Season Push

Atlanta, currently 58-69 and 9.5 games out of a Wild Card spot, has shown life recently, winning eight of their last ten games. Quantrill is expected to take the rotation spot of Erick Fedde, who has struggled to a 7.11 ERA in four starts since joining the team.
