Breaking MLB News: 2-Time Gold Glover Announces Retirement

He made a 12-year career for himself in major league baseball, playing shortstop with the best of them, winning two Gold Gloves. But at the age of 35, longtime Arizona Diamondback SS Nick Ahmed has officially called it quits. He made the announcement on a podcast this morning.

“With a lot of careful time, prayer, reflection and conversation with my wife, Amanda, I’m officially retiring from playing baseball,” he said. “It was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make in my life, for sure.

“The game has given me so much, and I have so much to be thankful for from it. But now it’s time to move on — move on to the next chapter of life and embrace that journey.”

He gave it a go earlier this season with the Texas Rangers, but only managed to get into five games, and went 0-for-9 at the plate. He was released in early May.

Ahmed spent 10 of his 12 seasons with the D-Backs, and was a rock at short for them, offering sensational defense, if not a whole lot at the dish. His two Gold Glove years were also his best offensive seasons, as he hit 16 home runs with 70 RBIs in 2018 and blasted a career high 19 home runs with 82 RBIs in 2019.

Congrats on a great career for Ahmed.
