MLB Trade Rumors: Walker Buehler Drawing Interest & Red Sox Could Move Him Soon

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Walker Buehler pitches during 2025 game.

Walker Buehler’s Boston experiment is quickly spiraling, and if the Red Sox pivot toward a retool at the deadline, the 30-year-old righty is expected to draw “plenty of suitors,” according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan

Despite his rough 6.29 ERA, Buehler’s postseason pedigree, plus his expiring one-year, $21 million deal, makes him a potential buy-low rental for contending clubs.

The Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Houston Astros, and Toronto Blue Jays have all been linked to Buehler, with the Dodgers looming as a sentimental favorite to bring back their former All-Star. Chicago, meanwhile, is aggressively seeking rotation help and may prefer a short-term swing like Buehler over paying a steeper price for arms with term.

Red Sox May Cut Ties Before Deadline

Boston is hovering around .500 and teetering on the edge of contention, just out of a wild-card spot. But after trading Rafael Devers, the writing may already be on the wall. Though manager Alex Cora is publicly backing Buehler, his leash is shortening. Buehler’s fastball and cutter have been hammered, while his sinker, sweeper, and slider still show flashes of effectiveness, giving potential suitors hope he can be fixed.

Low-Cost Gamble for Teams with October Aspirations

Buehler’s postseason history remains his biggest selling point. He tossed the final outs of the Dodgers’ 2024 World Series win and has proven capable of flipping a switch when it matters most. If the Red Sox decide to move on, expect playoff-bound teams to come calling fast, especially those confident in their pitching coaches’ ability to tweak his arsenal.
