MLB Trade Rumors: Top 5 Landing Spots For Walker Buehler

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Walker Buehler reacts during 2025 game.

Walker Buehler hasn’t been himself in 2025, posting a 6.29 ERA over 13 starts with diminished velocity and inconsistent command.

But the Boston Red Sox may still be able to deal him before the July 31 deadline. According to Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer, there's a 35 percent chance Buehler gets moved, and despite his struggles, his postseason pedigree and past dominance keep interest alive.

Here are Rymer’s top five potential landing spots if the Red Sox shop their veteran right-hander.

1. San Francisco Giants

The Giants have already gone big-game hunting by trading for Rafael Devers, and adding Buehler would further reinforce their push toward October. Oracle Park’s pitcher-friendly layout could help revive his effectiveness, and San Francisco still has plenty of payroll room beneath the luxury tax threshold. Buehler wouldn't be relied upon as an ace behind Logan Webb and Robbie Ray, making him a low-risk, high-upside gamble.

2. Chicago Cubs

The Cubs boast one of the league’s top offenses, but their rotation is holding them back from serious contention. With Justin Steele done for the year and Shota Imanaga just returning, Buehler offers a veteran arm with October experience. He wouldn’t cost much in prospect capital and fits under the Cubs’ payroll. While bigger names like Zac Gallen or Sandy Alcántara may tempt Chicago, Buehler could be a value fallback.

3. Toronto Blue Jays

Toronto is hanging around the playoff picture but still carries a negative run differential, largely due to an inconsistent rotation. Max Scherzer’s return won’t fix everything, and Buehler, despite his rough AL East debut, could be a worthwhile flier. As a short-term rental with minimal trade value, the cost won’t be prohibitive, even for a division rival like Boston.

4. Detroit Tigers

Detroit was reportedly in on Buehler this past offseason, and with their rotation thinning due to injuries and regression, they could revisit the idea. While their primary needs are in the bullpen and middle infield, the Tigers have room to absorb Buehler’s salary and are chasing a World Series run. He wouldn’t be their ace behind Tarik Skubal, but he'd deepen the staff for October.

5. New York Mets

Don’t let the Mets’ league-best rotation ERA fool you, they’re still hurting for depth while waiting on Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea, and Tylor Megill. Steve Cohen’s open-wallet philosophy makes Buehler’s salary a non-issue, and pitching coach Jeremy Hefner might be the right voice to help Buehler rediscover his form. The only downside? The Mets may prioritize bullpen and outfield help first.
