Top Trade Candidate Slapped with Multi-Game Suspension by MLB

If betting on the game is the No. 1 crime a baseball player can commit, you'd have to think that throwing haymakers at fans would be a pretty close second.

One of the top bullpen trade candidates this summer is Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Dennis Santana, and he's now been suspended by major league baseball for four games for taking a swing at an overly mouthy fan situated over the dugout during a Pirates/Tigers game.

Santana was also fined an undisclosed amount for the altercation that took place in Detroit.

Despite the video evidence, Santana is appealing the suspension.

It happened in the seventh inning of the Pirates' game at Comerica Park on Thursday. Santana could be seen jumping into the air to take a swing at the Detroit fan, who was sitting a few feet above the Pirates' bullpen.

After the game, Santana said the fan "crossed the line" several times during the game. The fan was removed from the stadium by Tigers security.

"Like I said, you guys know me and you know my temper. I'm a calm person, and ... the guy crossed the line a few times... It was just too much," Santana said through an interpreter.

The 29-year-old has become a top trade candidate with his best season in the majors, by far, in his eight-year career. He has a 1.72 ERA plus five saves and a 0.83 WHIP with a 25:5 strikeout to walk ratio in 31 innings.
