MLB Trade Rumors: Red Sox Place Another Player On Trade Block

As the Boston Red Sox continue to tread water below .500, MLB insider Jeff Passan reports that outfielder Wilyer Abreu could be on the move.

With Roman Anthony, the No. 1 prospect in baseball, thriving in Triple-A and pushing for a major league call-up, the Red Sox may soon need to clear space in a crowded outfield. While Jarren Duran has long been linked to trade speculation, Abreu’s name is now circulating among executives ahead of the 2025 MLB trade deadline.

Boston’s Outfield Depth Fuels Trade Speculation

Abreu has delivered a strong campaign in 2025, posting a .246 average, 13 home runs, and an .810 OPS over 59 games. Though his defensive numbers have dipped — he leads MLB in errors with five — Baseball Savant still grades him as a 90th percentile defender.

With club control through 2027 and a bargain salary of $749,500 this year, Abreu offers tremendous value for teams seeking affordable, controllable talent. According to Passan, multiple GMs view Abreu or Duran as "high-end" deadline targets in a thin trade market.

Roman Anthony’s Arrival Could Trigger a Move

Boston’s future hinges heavily on Roman Anthony, who is hitting .303 with eight homers in Triple-A. Though an injury and cautious promotion strategy have delayed his debut, insiders believe he's MLB-ready, and trading Abreu or Duran could open the door.

With Ceddanne Rafaela cemented in center field and Rob Refsnyder providing bench depth, the Sox may be primed to deal from a position of strength. If they do, expect a hefty return for a player like Abreu, who’s just entering his prime.
