Red Sox & Twins Strike Late-Night Deal

The Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins struck a late-night deal, as Boston sends A-Ball minor league IF/OF Andy Lugo to the Twin Cities in return for a reliever with an exciting repertoire, but an 8.88 ERA this season.

Jorge Alcala has struggled this season for the Twins, to say the least, posting an 8.88 ERA in 24 innings, with a 1.81 WHIP. But there is some promise for better things with the 24-year-old right-hander, as he struck out 10.4 batters per nine this season, and last year had a very successful campaign in the Twins bullpen, with a 3.24 ERA in 58 innings, holding opposition batters to a .190 batting average.

That mark has ballooned to a .302 mark this year, but can possibly partially be blamed on an unlucky BABIP of .369. He also needs to get the walks under control as he's issued 5.5 free passes per nine.

Alcala throws hard, as his fastball velocity was in the 97th percentile last season, and is still in the 88th pct. this year. He throws a slider, a cutter, and a sinker.

If Boston can help him get his command in order and bring down the walks, they've got an electric arm to add to the bullpen.

Lugo is a 21-year-old prospect out of the Dominican playing in High-A, where he has a .265 average this year with a .758 OPS.
