MLB Rumors: Phillies Could Trade For Struggling Hometown Ace

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen pitches during 2025 game.

The Philadelphia Phillies may get a shot at redemption and revenge by pursuing Arizona Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen at the trade deadline.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Gallen is drawing interest across MLB despite a rough 2025 campaign. And it’s not lost on anyone that the 29-year-old is a Philadelphia native who helped eliminate the Phillies in the 2023 NLCS. Now, he could be wearing their uniform by August.

Gallen Struggling, but Phillies Know the Ceiling

Gallen’s 5.75 ERA is the worst among qualified starters this season, and his last two starts, both disasters, came against the Colorado Rockies and Chicago White Sox. Still, this is the same pitcher who finished top-three in Cy Young voting two years ago. He’s dominated elite lineups this season (3-0, 0.92 ERA vs New York Mets and Yankees) and remains a big-game threat.

With Aaron Nola injured and no set return date, and with young arms like Mick Abel being tested early, Gallen could provide much-needed depth and upside for a World Series push.

Trade Could Come Cheap - But Is It Worth It?

The Diamondbacks are slipping out of contention and may be forced to sell, especially with Gallen set to hit free agency this winter. His shaky 2025 stats may keep the price low, creating a buy-low opportunity for Dave Dombrowski and the Phillies.
