MLB Trade Rumors: Top 3 Trade Candidates From The Athletics
The Athletics of Sacramento started out the season with an exciting young lineup leading them to their best start in years. A 20-16 record had them in 1st place in the AL West on May 5th. Unfortunately, they've since taken up their usual spot in the cellar of the division, and as one of the worst teams in baseball, going 3-22 since then.
Yes, the A's will be sellers once again at the trade deadline, and with the help of former MLB GM Jim Bowden, writing for The Athletic, let's take a look at the team's top 3 trade candidates as we head into June.
LHP Jeffrey Springs
Springs is finally back on the mound full-time after a couple of years ravaged by injuries. He had Tommy John surgery that wiped out his 2023 season, and his comeback was limited to just seven games in 2024 due to elbow fatigue.
He's not quite back to being the pitcher he was with Tampa Bay, where he had a 2.63 ERA over 86 appearances (35 starts) over four seasons. He's currently sitting with a 4.72 ERA through 12 starts, and his strikeouts are way down at 7.2 per nine, compared to the 10.5 K/9 he was registering with the Rays. But hey, he's apparently healthy, and some teams might be hoping he returns to close to his pre-surgery form at some point.
RHP Tyler Ferguson
With Mason Miller likely not available under any circumstances, Ferguson, 31, would be the reliever the A's could sell. He has a 3.76 ERA over 27 appearances and is holding batters to a .195 average. These numbers are pretty similar to what he did out of the A's 'pen in his rookie season last year.
3B/OF Miguel Andujar
Andujar is a long way removed from his near-Rookie of the Year season back in 2018 with the New York Yankees. Not only does his 27 HR, 92 RBI season that year stand out as his career pinnacle, but in seven seasons since, he's only totaled 20 homers. In seven seasons combined. And he's barely surpassed that 92 RBI total in all the subsequent years combined.
But he has handled the bat fairly well the last two years, just not with the same power. Last season in Oakland, he batted .285 with a 103 OPS+ in over 300 plate appearances, while this season with the A's, he's at .296 with a 106 OPS+.
Luis Urías and Gio Urshela are other possible names that could be on the trade block, but Urshela, like Andujar, is currently on the injured list.
