MLB TRADE: Former No. 1 Prospect On the Move In White Sox & Brewers Trade

It was just yesterday that the Milwaukee Brewers made a decision to pull veteran starting pitcher Aaron Civale from their rotation, which led to him asking for a trade. It took less than 24 hours for the Brew Crew to send Civale packing, and he heads to the lowly Chicago White Sox, in exchange for their former No. 1 prospect, Andrew Vaughn.

The 30-year-old Civale has been a starter for all 122 of his MLB appearances, with the Brewers, Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Guardians. He has a career 4.06 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP, and an effective 8.1 K/9 vs a 2.4 BB/9. His demotion to the bullpen in favor of top prospect Jacob Misiorowski did not sit well with him (Misiorowski, by the way, pitched five no-hit innings in his big league debut Thursday night).

The Brewers will try to revitalize Vaughn's career. He is having a dreadful season, batting just .189 with a .531 OPS and just five home runs. He also has a -1.6 bWAR, the second-worst in all of MLB.

What are the Brewers getting in Andrew Vaughn?

Vaughn went into the 2021 season as the White Sox No. 1 prospect, and the 14th overall in baseball, and by 2022, although he never really lived up to being the No. 3 selection in the 2019 Draft, he was showing some promise, batting .265 with a .747 OPS over the next two seasons, with 38 HR and 156 RBIs.

But he struggled in 2024, falling to just slightly below average as a hitter with a 98 OPS+, and he's completely cratered this year. It's time for a new organization to see if they can unlock the talents of the 27-year-old. For now, he's been assigned to Triple-A Nashville.
