MLB Rumors: Insider Names Marlins' Most Likely Trade Candidate

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Edward Cabrera walks off the field during 2025 game.

The Miami Marlins entered the 2025 season expected to shop ace Sandy Alcantara, but a poor return from Tommy John surgery has shifted the spotlight to a different arm: Edward Cabrera.

According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, Cabrera has quickly become the club’s most attractive and likely trade candidate ahead of the July 31 deadline. With a 2.38 ERA over his last seven starts and a $1.95 million salary, Cabrera offers contending teams a rare mix of affordability, control, and upside.

Guardians, Yankees, Cubs Among Top Suitors

The Cleveland Guardians are among the most aggressive teams in pursuit of Cabrera, eyeing him as a stabilizing force in a rotation beset by injuries and inconsistency. His recent stretch of dominance fits their playoff push, and his contract (under team control through 2028) fits with Cleveland’s long-term strategy.

The New York Yankees are also intrigued, viewing Cabrera’s evolving arsenal and improved command as a perfect addition for October. Meanwhile, the Cubs, who’ve leaned on patchwork starters since Justin Steele’s injury, see Cabrera as a valuable, high-upside addition to solidify their young core.

Cabrera’s Value Surging with Strong Recent Form

Cabrera’s stock is rising thanks to meaningful changes in his approach: a lower arm slot, a refined sinker, and an increased curveball usage. Scouts and analysts note his raw stuff is among the best of any starter available, and with his walk rate steadily improving, his ceiling is higher than ever.

With the Marlins clearly in sell mode and Alcantara’s trade value in flux, Cabrera has become the name to watch.
