MLB Rumors: Cubs Eyeing Big Trade Within The Next 7 Days

Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell reacts during 2025 game.

The Chicago Cubs aren’t waiting for the final countdown to July 31, they’re expected to swing a trade for a starting pitcher in the next 7 to 10 days, according to 670 The Score’s Bruce Levine

With Shōta Imanaga returning from injury but Justin Steele out for the year, the Cubs are short on rotation depth. Given the urgency to maximize their current roster, including star outfielder Kyle Tucker’s short-term contract, GM Jed Hoyer appears ready to move early.

Seth Lugo, Edward Cabrera Among Likely Targets

While fans might dream of a Sandy Alcántara blockbuster, Levine dismissed that notion and instead pointed to a younger, under-the-radar veteran as the more probable outcome. That description fits Edward Cabrera perfectly, Miami’s 27-year-old righty with years of team control and a solid 3.81 ERA. The Cubs may have to part with a top-10 pitching prospect like Brandon Birdsell or Jaxon Wiggins to make it happen.

Seth Lugo is another strong option. The Kansas City right-hander finished second in AL Cy Young voting last year and owns a 2.93 ERA in 2025. With a player option looming, Lugo fits as a short-term swing for a contending team, if they’re willing to gamble on the opt-out clause.

Cubs Linked to Multiple Top Trade Chips

According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Cubs are mentioned as suitors for six of the top 10 trade candidates, including Lugo, Cabrera, Zac Gallen, and Merrill Kelly. It’s a clear sign that Chicago is operating like a serious contender for the first time in years.
