MLB Rumors: 3 Dream Trades Proposed For Cubs To Make

Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez hits an extra base hit during 2025 game.

If the Chicago Cubs want to turn Kyle Tucker’s 2025 stint into something permanent, Aldo Soto of FanSided believes bold trade deadline moves are the answer.

With Tucker set to enter free agency this winter, the Cubs have an opportunity to show they’re serious about contending now and building for the future.

Soto outlined three dream trade targets, Sandy Alcántara, David Bednar, and Eugenio Suárez, that could transform the Cubs from playoff hopefuls into legitimate October threats.

3 Dream Trades to Help Cubs Keep Kyle Tucker

Tucker has delivered elite production and playoff pedigree since arriving from Houston, and although the Cubs haven’t opened long-term extension talks yet, their best bet might be to let winning do the talking. Soto’s proposed trades address three key areas: rotation, bullpen, and third base.

Cubs Targets

1. Sandy Alcántara (Marlins, SP):
With Justin Steele out for the year and rotation depth exposed, Soto argues that Alcántara should be the Cubs’ top trade target. The 2022 NL Cy Young winner is regaining form after Tommy John surgery and is under team control through 2027. Pairing him with Shota Imanaga could give the Cubs one of the league’s most dangerous postseason tandems, and more importantly, signal to Tucker that Chicago isn’t settling for mediocrity.

2. David Bednar (Pirates, RP):
Despite some bounce-back performances in the bullpen, injuries and inconsistency remain a concern. Soto points to Pittsburgh Pirates closer David Bednar as the bullpen upgrade the Cubs need. Since being recalled from Triple-A, Bednar has posted a 2.03 ERA with a 36.8% strikeout rate and nailed all 11 save chances. He’s also under control through 2026, making him more than just a rental. A deal could be possible without giving up elite prospects.

3. Eugenio Suárez (Diamondbacks, 3B):
Third base has been the weak link in an otherwise potent Cubs lineup. Rookie Matt Shaw’s glove has been reliable, but he’s struggling at the plate. Suárez, with 25 home runs already in 2025, could immediately deepen the lineup and shift Shaw to a bench role. He’s a pending free agent, but Soto argues that a rental bat with big pop could push the Cubs over the top and help convince Tucker that Wrigley is the place to chase championships.
