MLB Trade Rumors: 6 Teams Named As Kyle Schwarber Destinations in Free Agency

6 Teams Named As Potential Kyle Schwarber Destinations in Free Agency

The Philadelphia Phillies are off to a sizzling start to the 2025 major league season, with an NL-best 32-18 record going into Friday's games. And as usual, Kyle Schwarber is one of those leading the way, as he's blasted an MLB-best 17 home runs thus far, to go with 37 RBIs in 50 games, a .969 OPS and a 166 OPS+. He's averaged  44 HR and 101 RBIs over the past three years.

But with free agency looming after the season, is there any chance he'll hit the market? Extension talks before the season “failed to advance,” wrote Ken Rosenthal recently. This week, however, Jim Bowden noted in The Athletic that "The Phillies want to retain Schwarber and are prepared to give him a long-term contract at the appropriate time."

But when is the "appropriate time"? For the Phillies' sake, it certainly better not be when free agency opens after the season, as Bowden suggests that there are at least six teams that would "love to have him" and will be all over him if he gets to the open market.

  • Atlanta Braves
  • Cincinnati Reds
  • San Diego Padres
  • Detroit Tigers
  • Kansas City Royals
  • Cleveland Guardians

As Schwarber is only a DH these days, the Braves would only be in need if Marcell Ozuna left as a free agent himself this coming offseason.

The Reds could use an upgrade at DH, and in the power department, where they find themselves closer to the bottom of the league in home runs than to the top. And just imagine how many bombs Schwarber would hit in the Great American Ballpark?

Bowden figures that Schwarbs would be "a great fit in the clubhouse" for the Padres as well.

He then turns his attention to the American League, and points to the power shortage in the three AL Central teams, but we would nominate most notably the Royals, who are dead last in the majors in longballs thus far in 2025.

The Phillies currently have a two-game lead on the New York Mets for the top spot in the NL East, and it's expected that they'll do their best to try to extend their power-packed DH before any of those rival teams have a chance to get their mitts on him.
