Insider Suggests Red Sox's Ideal First Base Solution on Trade Market
The Boston Red Sox still have a problem at first base. After Triston Casas suffered an ugly season-ending injury, and Rafael Devers refused the team's request to move to first, they've been filling the void with the likes of Nick Sogard and Abraham Toro. Before this season, they'd played a total of 16 games at first base in the majors between them.
Then they tried working out rookie second baseman Kristian Campbell at the first base bag, though his disappearing bat has left him benched in some recent games. He's batted just .037 in his last seven contests, and .193 over the last month, after a hot start to his major league career in early April.
Now, insider Bob Nightengale has suggested an ideal solution to plug in at first in Fenway, if and when he becomes available closer to the trade deadline:
If the Boston Red Sox are still looking for a first baseman at the trade deadline, Rhys Hoskins of the Milwaukee Brewers could be the perfect fit. Hoskins, a free agent after the season, will be available if the Brewers aren’t in the playoff hunt.
Is a Rhys Hoskins trade in the offing for the Boston Red Sox?
Hoskins, who got off to a slow start this season, has been tearing the cover off the ball lately, and is currently hitting .291 going into Tuesday's play, with an .854 OPS, five homers and 25 RBIs. He's batting .340 over the past month with a 1.007 OPS and 21 ribbies in 30 games. He's now fully recovered from the torn ACL that wiped out his 2023 season. Imagine the right-handed slugger eyeing that short right field porch in Fenway at 302 feet on a regular basis.
The Brewers are 4th place in the NL Central, but just 5.0 games back of the Chicago Cubs in first, so they're unlikely to give up on their season just yet. The Red Sox will have to wait on any potential trade.
