San Francisco Giants DFA Veteran Pitcher

San Francisco Giants pitcher Lou Trivino reacts after 2025 game.

The San Francisco Giants designated right-hander Lou Trivino for assignment on Sunday, ending his brief comeback with the team and making room for highly touted lefty Kyle Harrison.

Trivino, who hadn’t pitched in the majors since 2022 due to Tommy John surgery and shoulder setbacks, struggled in his return. Despite a handful of clean outings, his 5.84 ERA, 11 hits allowed, and four homers given up in just 12.1 innings were enough for the Giants to move on.

Trivino's Return Ends Quietly

Trivino’s spring training story was one of perseverance, winning a roster spot after a long layoff. But on a bullpen stacked with fresher arms, he found himself used mostly in mop-up duty. Even with flashes of promise—scoreless appearances in four of his last five games—the home run rate and lack of swing-and-miss stuff proved too risky for a contending Giants team just 1.5 games out of first in the NL West.

With no minor league options left, the 33-year-old now hits waivers and may land with a club seeking veteran bullpen help.

Harrison's Role Still Developing

Taking Trivino’s place is 23-year-old Kyle Harrison, who was dominant in Triple-A Sacramento with a 3.46 ERA and a resurgent fastball touching 98 mph. While Harrison was a key starter for the Giants in 2024, early-season illness and a delayed ramp-up saw him lose the final rotation spot to Landen Roupp. For now, manager Bob Melvin confirmed Harrison will work out of the bullpen, giving the Giants a second lefty behind Erik Miller and possibly an eventual path back to the rotation.
