The Cubs' situation is clear: their hot corner production has been a glaring weak spot. While prospect Matt Shaw is expected to take the reins long-term, his struggles at the major league level have left Chicago relying on a rotating cast that includes Jon Berti, Nicky Lopez, and Vidal Brujan.
For a club leading the NL Central and pushing for a deep postseason run, McMahon is a clear upgrade with his elite glove and left-handed power.
Rockies at a Crossroads, McMahon's Fit with Contenders
The 8–39 Rockies are well out of contention, and with McMahon under contract through 2027 at $16 million per year, Colorado may finally be ready to move a veteran core piece. Though owner Dick Monfort has historically been reluctant to deal homegrown players, McMahon's recent surge—he's hitting .333 with a .443 OBP in May—could inflate his trade value.
NEWS: The Chicago Cubs have identified #Rockies 3B Ryan McMahon as a trade target this summer, per @BNightengale

For the Dodgers, the interest is more speculative. Max Muncy remains in place at third, but his inconsistency and the club’s penchant for adding versatile depth could make McMahon an appealing option, especially if Los Angeles shifts Muncy into a utility role. Still, an intra-division trade might prove more difficult, particularly with McMahon considered a favorite of Rockies ownership.
Ultimately, the Cubs appear to be the more aggressive suitor. They have the prospect depth to make a compelling offer and the financial flexibility to absorb McMahon's contract. If Shaw doesn’t stick following his expected return from Triple-A, Chicago could make a serious push to acquire McMahon as a stabilizing presence at third base through the 2027 season.
